This is the moment all authors wait for- the book birthday! Sallie's book, The Eternal Soldier, launches in less than one month (May 7th, but who's counting?!)
It's funny but the whole time I have been writing this book (nearly five years), I have never referred to it as my book. It has always been "Sallie's book" because it is truly Sallie's story; I was just lucky enough to hear it.
And now I feel lucky enough to tell it to lots of kids and parents and teachers across the U.S. and all over the world, which if I am being honest, blows my mind. You see, in a lot of ways, I still feel like the thirteen year old sitting on her bed staring at the birds on the telephone wires outside, writing in her journal, wondering if she would ever be a writer. To say I feel lucky is an understatement. I am thrilled to have found Sallie and I am humbled to bring her incredible story of bravery, loyalty, and true friendship to a whole bunch of people. This is almost too much for a girl from Clearfield, PA to believe. But I've pinched myself, I have the bruise, and now I know my dream is about to come true.
Because I am also a teacher (shout out to my students!), I want to celebrate Sallie's book birthday by giving away a copy of The Eternal Soldier to a teacher who comments below. Tell me why you like using picture books to teach or lead discussion in your classroom (I teach high school and use picture books all the time btw), how you bring nonfiction into your classroom, or what kinds of activities you do with your students to encourage creativity.
I will draw a name from a hat on May 7th as we celebrate Sallie (real high tech, I know) and you will receive a signed copy of The Eternal Soldier for your classroom library.
Teachers, just comment below, and away we go! :)
